LOL. That relatively little amount of gold wasn't going to sustain a growing California. It was agriculture that was the real breadwinner for most of the 1800's and into the 1900's.
Many of the gold rush towns went bust quickly.
Well duh. Before the gold rush, no one was here. After that CA grew exponentially and became a state and was admitted to the Union. Once people started exploring they've found fertile land etc...

Actually, people have been going to California since the 16th century. San Diego was founded in 1769. Kind of ironic that the San Diego Padres started their first MLB season on San Diego's 200th anniversary.
Los Angeles - 1781.
San Jose - 1777
San Francisco - 1776
You've just described liberal northern inner cities.
And yet, that has long applied to the South.
North Carolina frequently ranked in the top 10 for murder rates during the 1960s. In 1960, North Carolina ranked #3 in the nation for violent crime. Conservative North Carolina in those days. #1 for assault in 1960, #6 for murder.
South Carolina and Alabama in 1960 were #1 and #2 for murder.
No people really really do. It's reflected in it's housing price most significantly. That's what high demand does to the prices of housing. The only thing that's holding everyone back is the free market pricing people out.
High demand? The population is falling. You are making no sense.

In the coastal cities, that is largely due to people being priced out. Ever been to Santa Barbara? Paradise. Wish my parents had bought a house there back in the seventies when you could find one that was affordable. Now even the hood is waaay above my pay grade.
I cannot understand though, why anyone would live in the desert areas of California. If I'm going to live in a desert ****hole, ill do it in Nevada or Arizona where it's much cheaper COL.
I guess the new economic tonic according to Los Angeles and Chicago is to have native-born Americans moving out in droves and lots and lots of international immigration and births.
I have no opinion, but it seems like that is magic formula that Los Angeles, Chicago and New York City want these days.
New York City metro had a domestic outmigration of just 199,000 people in one year, it only gained because of international migration and child births.
Looks like based on the numbers Americans are rushing out of Los Angeles with all that equity and swarming into Las Vegas and Phoenix with the extremely low taxes, freedom and libertarian and conservative mentality.
I live in NYC. NYC has huge surgence of out of town native whites. White America in suburbia was decimated and still is decimated due to economic reasons. Now here in NYC, we see a full stream of educated whites who are happy ot leave their abodes. What keep NYC birth rate up is high rate of out of wedlock births, and an extremely aging population.
With close to 40 million residents, California won't ever miss the 87,000 who left.
California is the nation's most populated state. It's the 3rd largest state land mass in the nation, and generates a 3rd of our national economy. It's economy is larger than France's or most other countries in the world. It is the 6th largest economy in the world.

These cities are some of the most liberal in the nation. Only Oakland and DC seem to be doing badly. The rest are doing well. The Bay Area. SF and SJ seem to be markedly safer and less employment challenged than Oakland. All are run by liberals. Only Oakland is doing badly.
