You don't force feed anyone, anything, but the school system should be responsible for providing access to healthy food. If the kids do not like what the school is providing, they are free to bring their own lunch from home with whatever junk food they want.
And that is what is happening.
When that happens the school pushes to get students to eat the school lunches because the school gets more federal dollars. Why promote healthy lunches for children when the children wont eat them. They are defeating the purpose. All they are proposing is flexibility. Lunches can be healthy without being fat free, soy and wholegrain.
Another thing I find backwards is that (in my gsons school) they limit the amount of serving. So if it is something the kids will eat they will throw out food before they will allow a student a second serving.
Not getting enough food (calories) was also a complaint in some school districts. Some students may be overweight but many are involved in multiple sports and easily burn up the restricted caloric intake of the provided lunch.
This is really unfortunate. Children need good nutritious food for growing and learning, giving in to food that is more processed is not going to support the childrens health.
Does this mean there will be less access to fresh fruit, salad bars and the return of the pop machine?
Is there somewhere to read the specifics? Another head of a department making decisions that are really not in the best for that department. This new Department's Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue does not care about improving our health or our childrens health.
Did you read the article linked in the OP?
Its more about flexibility. The lunches will still be healthy the schools just wont be forced to abide strictly by the whole grain, fat free, soy, no sodium, skim milk requirement.
They have found that too many student just aren't eating this stuff. What is the point of spending on something that is not consumed and not improving the health of our kids.
So they don't have to replace all their grains with whole-grain. They can use slightly more sodium. And they can use 1% milk.
Wow, might as well just serve them ho-hos, mountain dew, and cheetos.

Off-topic: I think giving soy in significant amounts and with significant regularity to growing boys is child abuse.
they provide far more nutrition than raw cauliflower in a garbage can, though

I guess I'll have to disagree. Better to let them go a little hungry than feed them the above.

What...spoiled, entitled little twerps don't want to eat their vegetables?!
I thought conservatives were all about good ol' American values?! When I was a kid, I ate whatever what was put on the table in front of me. I didn't have a choice.

I'm against the overly-heavy hand of government being imposed (and having regrettable negative consequences) in the name of trying to engineer certain outcomes when a lighter hand will suffice.

Then tell us what you're proposing for the kids who heretofore have been refusing the top-down mandated "healthy" school meals? Force-feeding?
posts claiming 'republicans hate children!' and 'racism!', form a line to the left
Yeah.
Better fat kids on sugar rushes than hungry kids. Diet is something that needs to be left to parents, not schools, but schools can balance a pretty good menu based on what kids will eat or not.
But then, I also think schools shouldn't be substitutes for parenting in general, too.
