Belafonte labeled George W. Bush the "greatest tyrant in the world,’’ while telling Chavez how “millions’’ of Americans supported him.

Boxing promoter Don King praised Chavez and his "revolution,’’ announcing, "To see what is happening here makes me feel good all over.’’
The Venezuelan people elected Chavez. What business is that of ours?

Because they ran out of other people's money. The country failed when socialism failed. Take the blinders off.
They are a petro-state funded by oil. That's not other people's money. You're just sitting here with your freshman-level worldview passing judgement on situations you do not even care to understand.

It's my business because this is what the left is promoting. It's an example of what happens with socialism. I'll bet you won't find any of those Hollywood A-listers who thought this was great going there to live now.

The only outspoken fans of Hugo here in the US seemed to be wealthy Hollywood celebrities.

But like desertdetroiter, I say they wanted it, they got it.

Don't let them flee here unless they've got a lot of cash to invest or badly needed skills.

Venezuela essentially succeeded in making equal pay a reality. Not completely, but as close as you can see in modern times with a country in its situation.

Since it just isn't possible to move everyone up to equal pay, you end up moving everyone down to equal pay. Simply put, equal pay means practically everyone is poor.

Yes, I know there were rich and middle class in Venezuela, but the poor was, by far, the biggest REAL demographic.

It was a country that could have had a relatively small percentage of poor, but when you want equal, it becomes equal to the lowest denominator.

The routinely seized private assets and redistributed them or forced (at gunpoint) stores to sell at 1/10th of normal price.

They exacerbated their own oil production via both asset seizure which chilled foreign investment as well as cronyism so not only did oil prices fall, their production did too.

So, frankly I think you're both right to some extent but in fairness Chavez made a pretty big showing of taking other peoples money and redistributing in accordance with his views.

I keep waiting to hear his daughter has fled the country with a few billion....

Venezuela was the wealthiest nation in South America before Chavez took over. Now they can't provide toilet paper to their people.

I'm betting Sean Penn could straighten this out. Or maybe Michael Moore.

and the left wants to bring that here under the guise of "democratic socialism".
