I developed a theory based on the election results in Florida. If you in the link below Trump won Florida by about 1.2%. If you click on the Senate link on top of that page you will see that Rubio won the state by about 7%. It looks like a lot of people voted Republican for The House and the Senate in Florida but let the President block blank. Voter Turnout was excellent in Florida in 2016. Way up from the 2012 numbers. Rubio was one of the few Senators who was able to walk the line of endorsing Trump while not alienating traditional Republicans. I think that Rubio got both the new Trumplicans and the traditional Republicans

In Pennsylvania I met a lot of people who said they never voted before, haven't voted in a very long time or used or vote Democrat but were now voting for Trump. A lot of those people (I would say about 10%) told me that they wouldn't vote for Toomey because he wouldn't support Trump. Toomey won the state by about 100K votes and President Trump won it by about 44K.

My theory is that Trump created a lot of New Republicans. It also had the effect of making a lot of Republicans leave the President Box blank this year. I think this is extremely good news for the GOP because in 4 years many of those voters will be more comfortable with Trump and vote for him. At the same time the new Republicans will vote for Republicans in othe races as Trump and the GOP's platform melt together.

This could work in the opposite way also if Trump became a political embarrassment which he is on his way to doing. Who can take his word for anything? He changes his mind every hour on a subject.

I agree OP, that's the impression I had too.
Big tax cuts will bring plenty of traditional Republicans in, plus the media has been so harsh in his 1st year that its easy to side with Trump.
Whereas in 2016 the media justified their hate more by linking Trump to sex scandals.
Now the hate looks insanely illogical, especially when the Dems hated Comey all along and are now pretending that Comey shouldn't have been fired....

I'm confident that Obama made many, many more Republicans than Trump could ever dream of making. One of the very few things Obama excelled at was converting voters to the Republican Party. That and making sure Democrats got fired.

I think the mess that Obama has made over the last 8 years and Hillary poised to add to the heap created many more Republicans then Trump did.

What Trump did and is still doing is motivating people to get off their butts and get involved with politics. Of course most of the people who are coming out are now marching in opposition to Trump but enough came out on election day to hand him the electoral college and the win.

The Dems need to be careful because they might lose even more if the voters think they are doing nothing but outrageously blocking everything Trump thinks about. There opposition is getting old.

The Reps need to be careful because they might lose out if the the voters perceive that they are working against Trump and more for the Dems.

Trump needs to be careful in that he doesn't do anything over the top stupid. Every President has their ups and downs creating good policies and bad so that is just par for the course.

Amen. I doubt GOP takes the Senate nearly as fast w/o the BO/Pelosi/Reid over-reach his first few years.

In doing that, BO laid the groundwork for POTUS Trump and our latest conservative SC Justice.

That is why I don't get about the whole "Trump Russian Story". Why is the DNC pushing it so hard? I support him and voted for him but he has made some mistakes. Instead of focusing on those they are dialing every little petty thing he does up to 11 and Spending a ton of time and energy on Russia. It's allowing the Trump Platform and the GOP platform to melt together. Like even if Trump didn't do anything he said he would I can't imagine voting Democrat again. The whole Democrat Platform now is strife and division. They aren't offering any kind of plan or vision for America.

They don't have a plan. Unless one considers being a proxy for every .0001% of America fringe group a plan.

That was rejected by 31 states and a solid majority of the EC a few months ago.

Trump's performance in 2016 was less impressive than House Republicans based on the number of districts won. He carried 230 districts (vs. 205 for Clinton) while House Republicans won 241 (vs. 194 for Democrats). So unlike in the Senate, there is actually a little downside for Republicans in the House if the 2016 presidential numbers align directly with congressional winners in the future. But they would still hold a solid majority.

Maybe Trump did create new Republicans ... but he could possibly push some voters towards the Democrats if they prioritize holding the executive branch accountable. It may not be indicative of anything, but Democratic candidates have performed better in the special elections thus far this year than they have traditionally in the same districts. This hasn't been enough to win so far but it looks like at least for the moment, Democrats are pretty motivated to turn out. Whether they can sustain this throughout the Trump administration, which is taking plenty of action that greatly antagonizes liberals, remains to be seen.

I saw a bumper sticker today on an older couples vehicle. Said Democrats for Trump...not the first time I had seen it down this way either.
