I never heard of him either, but remember when these types of things were considered an honor to do and meant to truly inspire graduates and the school? Why they keep inviting 'celebrities' to make a mockery of the process is beyond me.
The 'sex with an immigrant' joke took up 5 seconds of a nearly 20-minute speech that also spoke fondly and proudly of Grinnell College and the Grinnell community, of Iowa and the people of Iowa; it spoke of not being afraid to fail, and about finding your path and true passion in life; about seeking out diverse experiences, about embracing opposing viewpoints and not living in a bubble...trying to empathize with the guy that says 'they're taking all our jobs'.
Every speech, even one made NOT by a comedian, will incorporate some moments of levity. Even eulogies contain jokes sometimes.
Grinnell didn't invite some random celebrity. They invited Nanjiani because he's a successful alumnus of the school, and therefore an inspiration to graduates. Most people (even with every advantage) will never gain success in the entertainment industry, and this immigrant with a uni-brow and a funny accent was able to claw his way up to an award-wining and critically acclaimed HBO series where he is making more per episode than most people make in a year. And that's in addition to stand up, a lengthy acting resume, writing, producing and podcasting. Grinnell '17 would be lucky to find that kind of success in their respective fields.
I guess a lot of people forget that an anchor baby has to be 21 before they can endorse a parent. The parent then has to show all kinds of papers and anchor baby needs to have enough funds to support the parent.
If the parent is still in the USA that will show the parent came here illegally and has to go back to sit out a ban.

Nanjiani made a joke about having sex with immigrants, not with illegals. Nanjiani isn't an illegal, and neither are his parents. Or do you not know how to differentiate between immigrants and illegals? Is it because of an intellectual, or language deficiency?
