The people are to police themselves. Law enforcement is just there to clean up and take names.

What in god's name is the purpose of holding a rally for Trump? Didn't he already win?
Especially in a very liberal anti-Trump city?

The only possible purpose of such a rally is to provoke a fight and incite a riot, which is the only possible thing that could come out of this. In which case the mayor is right to request the permit be denied.

Why was it ever granted in the first place? Because the feds are working under Trump?

Because it's free speech and yes, people can hold rallies for already sitting politicians if they like. They can hold a rally to say cats are better than dogs (obvious truth). They can hold a rally to proclaim Satan is good or God is good. Point being, unpopular speech is absolutely protected under our Constitution and this mayor is absolutely in the wrong to not issue a permit if he has done so for other political groups.

Hate to bust your bubble, but the 1st amendment isn't there to discuss the weather.
It is there to say very offensive and hateful stuff, without harm or restriction.

And yes, you can yell FIRE in a theater... Try it.

I wonder why they don't allow anti-Trump rallies.

It's usually only the right-wing and hate groups that are allowed to march whenever and wherever they want.

Yup, that's a myth. The Supreme Court never actually ruled that you can't yell fire in a theater.

Duh--so maybe it is because one of their infamous 'free speech' demonstrators just stabbed three people and murdered two of them?

Perhaps the mayor is concerned tensions and emotions will boil over due to the recent violence perpetrated by said violent murdering 'free speech advocate'?

Of course, the alt-right snowflakes really don't care about the public good--they're outraged--they'd be happy to spark a fire.

"...The mayor of Portland, Oregon, is asking the federal government to cancel the permit for an "alt-right" rally scheduled for Sunday, saying it could make a difficult situation worse, after two men were stabbed to death as they tried to intervene when a pair of women were targeted by a man yelling what authorities have described as hate speech...."

"...In a video recorded by a reporter with the Portland Mercury media outlet, a man who identifies himself as Jeremy Christian, is seen at the "March for Free Speech" in Montavilla on April 29. Police are seen confiscating a baseball bat from the man..."

He has already filed all the paperwork for 2020 and is holding campaign rallies. It is like a Rock Concert Tour.

Really???? There's been a plethora of anti-Trump rallies. So many it's about the world's easiest Google search. You should try it. Let Me Google That For You.

Maybe you're confused because so many anti-Trump rallies devolve into chaos and riots?

Maybe he should step up protection to ensure citizens have and maintain free speech even in the face of tense times. If he cared about people's rights, he would want to ensure they were protected, wouldn't he? Or maybe he's a fair weather civil rights kind of guy. Only when it's easy and all.
