They were "big" because of Con frenzy and, really, fake news. That is, news that was assembled by Con people to put Hillary in a bad light, as they always do. I remember one time when they started a rumor that she had a brain tumor.
You're right: There was nothing particularly bad in her emails. Sure, no one wants their emails made public - people will mock the pettiness, the misspellings, etc. But there's nothing really bad, certainly nothing criminal.
Why should conservatives defend the President? We elected him to keep his campaign promises, not to nit pick his every move. He's no angel, but better than the devil you guys picked.

Because the "email thing" was real, and the stuff about Trump is conspircy theory nonsense that is literally being disproven daily.
There is no shortage of verifiable evidence that Hillary was, at best, mishandling classified information in an unprecedented manner, and scale. The reality is that what Hillary was doing was highly illegal, and there is no shortage of evidence to prove it.
