It's scary looking at that picture - now knowing that that picture is of a doomed man.
An unbelievably callous thing for her to say. She's within her legal right to say these things, but if I ran that school, I'd not require her services anymore. She seems to have a real bias against white men, and university is not the place for prejudices.
say what you want about the heavy-handed punishment, but whether people like it or not, north korea is a sovereign country and are within their right to create and enforce laws as they see fit within their borders. its up to foreigners to either obey them or stay away. i won't say he got what he deserved, but he got what was expected. what did he think would happen trying to steal propaganda from a totalitarian regime?
This post sums up the conservative view on freedom of speech quite well. I hope you are joking though.
Though I don't agree with her views - I find the righties position on this very hypocritical. They cry 'free speech" every time some hatemonger wants to hold a Nazi rally but want this professor fired for her speech.
If you listen or read his "confession" in court, it's clear that it was a set up and fake confession.
Also, the poster was a large wall sized poster. Not something you could easily put in your suitcase. Additionslly, the video never shows the person's face.
I don't believe he actually tried to steal it.
With all the human rights issues in North Korea, I cannot fathom why someone would want to visit that nation. It has no regards for the rights of people and should be avoided. If Otto had never went there, he would still be alive today.

My thoughts exactly. He didn't get what he deserved, but the risk he ran by going there was high. It was a bad, bad choice. Unless you are an American head of state or apparently Dennis Rodman, there's no way I'd go to North Korea.
I don't agree exactly with what she said. But snowflakes from the US think they can go to other countries and do what they want with no repercussions.
Simple things, like I read a while back that you can get prison time in Singapore for chewing gum. The UK has a limit on free speech, even more so than we do. France has very strict privacy laws, some things done here would get you in trouble there. In middle east countries, you can offend people by offering the wrong hand to shake. But Americans go to other countries and think they should get a pass because they are "special".
Why would anyone want to go to North Korea, especially an American? They hate us.
