A convenience store owner was sentenced to 8 years for fatally shooting a shoplifter. Per the article, the owner got in a fight with a shoplifter who was trying to steal cigarettes. The owner initially said that he shot the shoplifter because he was reaching for his gun, but the tape apparently, clearly showed that he shot the victim in the back as he was running away. The owner was quoted saying that he was wrong for taking the victim's life and would accept his punishment.
I get that you have to protect your store and it's probably a nuisance having to deal with some of the characters they have to deal with; but how does someone end up dead over some $5 cigarettes?
You hear about these serious altercations/fights and sometimes killings between convenience store owners and customers pretty frequently in bad neighborhoods. Many time it's related to minor theft (items worth a few dollars). Not saying stealing is right at all. Maybe more respect between both parties is warranted.
Same situation.....but police officer.......he would be a free man and probably get go fund me donations in the tens of thousands.
Sad that a crime victim ends up being the one punished. Sounds like an upstanding person pushed beyond his limits by criminal thugs in his area. Probation would be appropriate. At the least give him time off for good behavior for eliminating one more thug from society.
Shooting the victim in the back was a mistake and the shooter will pay for it.
People who weep for the thief amaze me. The man was a thief, a criminal, an individual who cared not one iota about the rights of anyone else. He was the kind of person who chooses to victimizes others. A person who thought so little of himself that he was willing to jeopardize his life, his future and his freedom for a pack of cigarettes. On his tombstone should read "Traded his life for a pack of smokes". Crime is a dangerous business. It's an occupation that often results in death. Criminals deserve their fate.
What is he nuts? Why would you plead guilty to murder? If he fought the charges or made a plea deal no doubt the sentence would have been much lower. No jury would have convicted him of murder.

That's about the only positive thing I can say that came out of this ordeal.
