According to statistics from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, the number of people from the US applying for permanent residency between January and March rose 3.6% from 2016 to 2017.
That doesn't exactly constitute a mass exodus, especially when looking at the raw numbers: 1,882 Americans have applied for permanent residency in Canada in 2017, just 66 more applications from the same time period in 2016.
As for visas and authorizations issued to people from the US from January to March, the amount increased a mere 1%, from 2,497 in 2016 to 2,523 in 2017.
It's actually fairly difficult to obtain a permanent visa from Canada.
But once that's accomplished, obtaining citizenship is about the same as it is in the United States. An applicant has to pass a Canadian history exam and have some qualifications.
And both Canada and the United States allow dual citizenship, so obtaining one does not mean anyone has to give up the other.
Since both countries are very much alike, there are always advantages across the border for some folks, while not so much for others. That's the way it's always been, and Americans living in Canada is no different than an American who's living in France or any other nation.
Very few countries in this world have closed borders, and those that do probably don't offer the life most folks would want anyway.
But the United States is not the only country in the world that others see as a desirable place to live. At all. In the German concentration camps of WWII, the safest places in the camp were always called 'Canada'.
The thought of living in Canada meant a longer life with a greater hope of freedom for millions of trapped Jews.
