Exactly.

With a Republican governor, presumably the status quo would be pretty much maintained, maybe he'd appoint someone a bit more likely to tow the line but in reality, McCain hasn't been a maverick for a long time. He still talks a good game at times but ultimately goes along with the party line, so if he did choose to step down, it likely won't really have all that much political impact.
I think McCain likes to have extra special status in the senate. He seems like he has been one of the last holdouts on things like the health care bill and remember some other instances too. But he usually ends up going with the GOP flow.

I agree not much will change. I first assumed there would be a special election and that might be very interesting.

This certainly explains his questioning of Comey a couple of months back.

Clearly something was going on with him. I am glad that it is being addressed.

A friend of mine, much younger than Senator McCain, is living very bravely with glioblastoma right now. She is doing very well at present, following diagnosis and almost immediate treatment (surgery and radiation) over 18 months ago. But her prognosis remains the same. Treatment bought her some time - it's just that no one can predict how much. So she and her family are making the most of each day.

I hope Senator McCain has many good days still ahead of him, and am very glad he's getting treatment at the Mayo Clinic - they're the best for glioblastoma and will likely perform genetic testing to determine the most effective course of treatment. It is encouraging that it sounds as if all of the visible tumor was removed - that blood clot was a blessing in disguise, as it led to the discovery of the tumor.

Regardless of one's political persuasions, this is a devastating diagnosis for a loyal, patriotic American who has given much for our country. This is not the time for ugly comments, particularly those wishing him additional misfortune. That sort of behavior is shameful and uncalled-for.
I couldn't agree more with everything you said.

Some really despicable comments regarding someone who has cancer and gave so much for his country.

My brother lasted 18 weeks with his glioblastoma. you can't remove the tumor they are like jellyfish, tenacles of the cancer grow everywhere in the brain, John McCain is a dead man.

My paternal grandmother died from a similar brain tumor/cancer. My father was suffering with his own cancer at the same time, too.

I wouldn't wish this on anyone, not even a republican. But again, McCain's strange behavior during the Comey testimony is indeed explained by all of this.
