I find it odd that Austin even had any streets named after Lee. While Lee served in Texas, he never spent time in Austin, that I have read. He was in San Antonio for a while, as well as Camp Cooper.
Nevertheless, the city council should avoid changing the name, if only doing so due to said vandalism. That only encourages others to start spray painting street names THEY don't like.
Back to my hole. People this stupid just make me sick.
That does not say that the road was named after Reverend Lee. The Robert E. Lee Elementary School in Austin opened in 1938 so was not named for the Reverend, and no evidence that the road was.
"It’s been officially known as Robert E. Lee Road since 1940, and it has been referred to as that by various resources since the 1920s,” Heckaman said.
Though he did confirm Robert E. Lee was the name of an NAACP chairman in the 1950s, Heckaman said this time frame would not be able to confirm that this Robert E. Lee was the actual namesake for the road.
