WASHINGTON - The American solar energy industry was struck a blow Friday when the U.S. International Trade Commission found that the low cost, foreign-made panels upon which it has thrived in recent years represented a "serious injury" to those companies manufacturing solar panels within the United States.
The ruling is likely to present President Donald Trump, who will make the final decision on what, if any tariffs to impose, with the opportunity to carry through on his promise to protect American manufacturing while at the same time slowing an upstart industry that has presented a challenge to a coal industry that he has championed from the early days of his campaign. Last year solar accounted for almost 40 percent of new generation on the U.S. power grid, more than any other source, according to data compiled by GTM Research.
