So, we are equipped with these survival instincts on how to hunt, migrate to lands that have a good fresh water supply, how to fish and grow food, so why are there so many countries with starving people who don't do just that? You're talking about millions of people, who would be fought hook and claw, by those whose territory they were entering. There are no frontiers remaining in this overpopulated world, for such numbers of people to find a place to survive.

There's a lot of victims in the world.
Why are people standing in lines all day in Venezuelan cities for one bottle of cooking oil, when there is fresh water, game, fruit, fish all around them?
Why do millions of refugees migrate to first world countries and not stand and fight for their freedoms and their nations?
Why do millions of illegals cross into our country instead of fighting for their own countries?
For that matter, why do so many live in the squalor they live in, in THIS country? Why do they stay in third-world dangerous areas that are gangland owned? Why do they live in disease infested and dangerous tent cities?
Some of it it opportunism (easier to move to a better country than fight to make your OWN country better). Part of it is a culture that has no idea how to fend for itself - a learned helplessness and dependence on others to provide the necessities of life. The older I get the less empathy I feel for those who refuse to fight to better their own lives, their own communities, and their own countries.
Why? Because bombs have been dropped in their homelands, and civil wars started. They always had food and everything else until war mongers destroyed their homes.
People are being pushed out of rural areas where this kind of lifestyle has existed, to urban areas where they are dependent, become lazy and discouraged or prohibited from owning weapons or ever learning survival skills like hunting or fishing. Rural lifestyle is sold as boring, unsophisticated, trashy, dumb. Urban cool diverse global techno uber dependence is where its at. Nothing can ever go wrong with that.

Because the earth's human population is simply unsustainable by stone age hunting/gathering techniques. In many locales, your proposal might work for a handful of individuals, but the bulk would soon perish. Those game animals and edible plants would vanish quickly if the locals descended into stone age lifestyles.
It's the advance of technology that allows agricultural output to reach levels where 7 billion+ can survive, many existing in a precarious state on the edge of malnutrition/starvation. What keeps most of humanity going these days is a distribution system that is very uneven in its allocation of resources. And the brutal reality is that population growth tends to be highest in those areas that are least able to support additional people.
Humanity always has brilliant individuals, but collectively, we're a species that tends to be very prone to self-inflicted damage.
We lose sight of the simple fact that if we don't control ourselves, nature will do it for us. Very harshly.

oh Bull: in most cases it has more to do with over population and lack of education, not war. Do you really think if there were no wars all the world's problems would be solved? That is pretty naive.

Short term, maybe, but rich western countries have gone through those things as well. I think the biggest factor in most cases is economic policy getting in the way/lack of economic freedom. Their own governments screw things up with their attempts to control everything.

I was going to say something similar, but this will work.
In addition, most of the people in those stories are not in the best of shape when they are finally found. They've survived, but not much more than that, and I don't recall any stories of people lost in the wilderness who managed to set up a successful food-growing operation, as that requires things they may not have, the most obvious being seeds to plant. But yes, the main problem is that most productive land is already owned by people or governments who are not eager to have it taken over.
Nevermind another fact that the OP does not mention: there are plenty of stories, too, about people who got lost in the woods or at sea who were later found dead or never found at all.
