The girl and her friends misjudged the environment. I imagine she and they thought that a white girl impersonating a black movie character who impersonated a white girl would be taken as clever, not possibly offensive. I'd bet at least one of them raised the offensive issue and was told nobody could be that insecure and sensitive. Too bad they didn't check with the Black Student Association first.
EDIT: I just saw post 64, which states the girl knew she'd offend people. I hadn't seen an account of that. Link please ?
She should have dressed as a member of the Black Students Association, fake tears and all. If she's going to have her life destroyed she might as well have made fun of these lying conniving crybabies while she was at it.

People can do whatever they want as long as they don't initiate force on others.
Suck it up, snowflake.
They hate it when we don't follow their meaningless rules. It is as if they just want to tell others what to do and get off on the power they think they have. Pretty telling. I think we fought a revolution partially due to that.
Would I wear blackface? No. Why? Because I find it distasteful, not because some liberal/progressive SJW, virtue signaler says I can't.
TY. I'd seen the term 'cover-up' used and thought it meant actions the students took After the reaction to her costume began. The texts shed a different light.
There's one thing that's not been mentioned yet, that I know of: the girl knew she was going to hurt and offend people; her conversations with her friends prove that.
What I'd like to know is, who goes out of their way to hurt and offend, racially or any other way? Seriously, who does that? Have we completely lost all sense of just being, you know, kind to each other?
Blacks sat at the "whites only" sections of lunch counters because they knew it would offend white racists. They also knew the reaction of the white racists (we've all seen those videos of black folks peacefully sitting at lunch counters being spit on and physically assaulted) would compel non-racists of all colors (but especially whites) to sympathize with them because they were morally and logically in the right but were treated unfairly just like the white girls on the team today.
And yes I'm fully prepared to stand behind that analogy. This is the only way to handle irrational fear and illogical mindsets (as the poster right after you mentioned) when faced with a wrong.
The racists today (SJWs and/or the Black Student Union) took the bait because when you're so full of hate you are unable to think logically.
Remember when the black dude hugged the neo-Nazi a few weeks ago? It's sort of in the same spirit of what these white girls did. The black guy, being of sound logic and an admirable moral code (the non-racist in the exchange), went out of his way to hug the Nazi because that broke the Nazi's narrative that blacks are inferior/bad.
You beat people who are morally and logically not up to snuff by using their own rules against them.

I saw the guy hugging the Nazi, and thought it was amazing. You could see love all over that man.
I don't see much love in the actions of this girl.
apparently it's funny and profitable for black guys to pretend to be white chicks, but not vice-versa.
1. Terry Crews is not the guy who pretends to be a white chick
2. She actually did a good job with her costume , it does not look like black face (in that it was just an attempt to make fun of black people, she looks like she actually tried)
This is one of those cases where I would agree everyone overreacted.

The black dude did seem to have a more emotional feel in his response but let us not forget that whatever emotional impact it had on him he was able to use logic in how he approached the whole thing.
He had never heard of Spencer when they decided to come to Gainesville. He researched him and his group and inspired by his emotion he acted logically.
Ultimately that is what we need in the fight against racists: logical responses using their own rules/tactics against them whether it be the white supremacist racists or the SJW/Black Student Union racists.
That's why I admire the black guy so much. Yes, he was coming from an emotional place in his response. You could see that. However, he had the strength and intelligence to realize that he must only let his emotion inspire him...not steer his actions.
The white girl wanted to make a point from a more "let me point out this double standard" angle. I appreciate both jobs these two pulled off.
Maybe it's because the black dude is a bit older and a mentor to high school kids whereas the white girl is barely out of high school herself that we see the different starting places.
Nevertheless, offending racists is always a good thing.
You are the one that is advocating a hypocritical position.
You claim that "white people can do what they want," yet you support white people being suspended for respectfully dressing up as a black man that dressed like a white girl - while accepting the black man dressing up as a white girl.
You have race-based double standards and don't truly support people doing what they want if you support them being punished and potentially expelled for it.
People like her will continue to shoot themselves in the foot........without ever realizing in the long term they are simply making their "cause" irrelevant and laughable.......

"overreacting" seems to be normal these days..........
