Is "you look average" OK? I mean, that is not saying you look one way or another, just average. Or how about "you look normal"? I am beginning to think some people go out of their way to be offended over everything.

Why does a cafe worker need to say anything like that to a patron?

I don't know but is it really that upsetting? Would you be upset if someone said you look tired? I wonder how some people get through the day without assuming the fetal position with thumb inserted in mouth several times a day. It's almost laughable if it wasn't so pathetic.

LOL. I cannot imagine approaching one of my clients/customers and saying something like 'You look average."

No, it's not upsetting. IMO the woman's reaction was dramatic, but I also think stuff like this should never be said in the first place. I managed to work in food service for 7 years without saying anything remotely like these types of comments to a customer.

I worked in the food industry going through school. I never heard of a customer crying over some comment like "you look tired". People are becoming complete whiners over the littlest things.

This. I myself, never have, and never would say that to anyone; if it was spoken to me out in public, I'd probalby be like, "um ok" maybe say a one-liner, maybe nothing more. But i sure as heck would NOT cry "I'm a victim" if it happened. But then, I don't susbscribe to the mantra of the Perpetually Offended, where EVERYONE'S a victim, and is just looking for ways to be offended
My point went right over your head.
You can't say anything without someone whining.
Maybe sometimes people have a right to whine, though. People can say whatever they want, we have freedoms like that in this country, BUT people are also free to react appropriately - many in this thread seem to think that such a comment in that context/setting was inappropriate. We are allowed to say so, so is this woman.
Why are you and others so offended that she is offended?

Hardly. And yes, you are.
