This kind of story is the real "interference" with our democracy. People believe this. Witness the OP. This is what the Russians supposedly did except 1000 times more effective.

Simpson also asserted that the Russian government had “infiltrated “ the National Rifle Association, which spent more than $400 million in the 2016 election, according to public records. The NRA supports mainly Republicans.

“It appears the Russians, you know, infiltrated the NRA, and there is more than one explanation for why,” he said in the testimony. “But I would say broadly speaking, it appears that the Russian operation was designed to infiltrate conservative organizations. And they targeted various conservative organizations, religious and otherwise, and they seem to have made a very concerted effort to get in with the NRA. And so there is a Russian banker-slash-Duma member-slash-Mafia leader named Alexander Torshin who is a life member of the NRA. And we spent a lot of time investigating Mr. Torshin. And he is well known to Spanish law enforcement for money laundering activity...”
The nice thing? This is not some conspiracy theories whack job- these are pretty well trained investigators and espionage agents. If the money trail is true.... the right wing establishment is tainted.

Wow.

What EVIDENCE do you have to make such an assertion?

Reagan must be turning in his grave.

The 'foreign money influencing US elections' loophole, w-i-d-e opened since Citizens United decision has yet to be closed.

Supreme Court Justice Alito winces.

...As Robert Weissman, president of the nonprofit advocacy organization Public Citizen, said, “We know that Citizens United opened the door for foreign money to influence U.S. elections. This case appears to be the first instance in federal elections where the money trail is clear and documentable from publicly available records.” ...

It would be nearly impossible to confirm how much foreign money has influenced our elections since CU ruling.

Impossible to track it all down, but some are coming to light.

For a time, the RNC was funneling funds to Trump for his legal expenses. Part of these funds were given to the RNC by a Ukrainian-born billionaire with ties to Vladimir Putin.

You're right. Also well worth the efforts.

Mr. Putin was likely encouraged by the CU decision as were others. Well past time US recognizes the obvious & takes a stand.

That is exactly what the article indicates, if you go to the link for McClatchy it has more details.

The FBI is looking into whether a Russian banker with ties to the Kremlin illegally funneled money to the National Rifle Association to help Donald Trump secure the presidency, according to a new report from McClatchy.

Quote:
However, the NRA reported spending a record $55 million on the 2016 elections, including $30 million to support Trump – triple what the group devoted to backing Republican Mitt Romney in the 2012 presidential race. Most of that was money was spent by an arm of the NRA that is not required to disclose its donors
