In my opinion, I think Trump using his little chicken brain felt they were moving closer and closer to losing the arbitration request and going to a public trial/depositions/whatever--
And he couldn't face that---
Thought if he said he didn't know anything about the agreement or the payoff that HE was off scott-free...
In his thinking--by passing the buck to Cohen--Trump played Pontius Pilate and washed his hands of any involvement in this problem...and can get off w/o depositions or punishment...
So pity poor Michael Cohen---I am sure this came as a total surprise to him, that it was not planned ahead of time, and he has been thrown under the bus on national tv...

Trump knew everything. Lol...he ought not start lying. Better to just keep his mouth shut.
Fortunately for the majority of us in this country, Trump is absolutely incapable of ever keeping his mouth shut. It's why he and his aides are trying so hard to avoid an interview with Mueller, because they know that he would let loose and his ego would run wild, revealing many things he'd not want to be known. Trump's henchmen are also very uneasy about him giving that interview, as they know he wouldn't hesitate to incriminate them, in trying to save himself.
So Cohen is probably going to get disbarred, Trump will pay him of, and pardon any crime. Stormy can talk her head off. Probably the best choice of all the bad ones he had.
It's not like Melania did not know what kind of man she married.
