Clinton 1996 State of the Union-
"But there are some areas that the federal government should not leave and should address and address strongly. One of these areas is the problem of illegal immigration. After years of neglect, this administration has taken a strong stand to stiffen the protection of our borders. We are increasing border controls by 50 percent. We are increasing inspections to prevent the hiring of illegal immigrants. And tonight, I announce I will sign an executive order to deny federal contracts to businesses that hire illegal immigrants."

And yet not one time did he mention building a damn wall or that Mexico would pay for it.

I think most Democrats and independents would be fine with a free wall.

What's not to like about that?

San Diego sector has driven crossings down to almost nothing compared to what it used to be.

There are still thousands and thousands of illegals in San Diego. The wall has not stopped them from coming there. As long as there are jobs, they will continue.

When you keep repeating the same line over and over again, it loses any effect that it might have once had.

This. The wall will be far too expensive and will not do much to stop illegal immigration.

Of course Joe Manchin would support the wall; he is up for reelection soon, and Trump won WV by the largest margin of any state. Living in WV, I know it is political suicide to be viewed as anti-Trump.

Trump couldn't negotiate his way out of a wet paper bag. He is all talk and zero substance. He couldn't get a healthcare bill passed to replace the ACA even though he has a Republican-controlled Congress.

Thus, the requirement for a better WALL. Liken to everything else, constant and never-ending improvement.

WV would have elected any Republican that had won. If the Democrats hadn't turned on the coal and gas industry it would still be (D).

Joe is a (D) and as you note, he won easily and will win again.

It's so much easier and cheaper to actually address the reason people come here. Again, the wall is simply a smoke screen for not doing that. Trump is not going to go after the cheap labor.
