Civil War in the US is highly unlikely. It certainly won't happen over guns, because there is zero chance that the 2nd amendment is going to be repealed. But here's a scenario I don't find all that far-fetched:

Robert Mueller finds real evidence of collusion by Trump. Trump is impeached and convicted. Trump, however, calls it all a witch hunt and refuses to vacate the White House. His supporters claim the impeachment to be an illegal coup, and rush to his defense. President Pence is unwilling to use the military to quash the rebellion, and instead tries to negotiate an agreement that would allow Trump to stay in power. Outrage on the left leads to massive demonstrations, and ultimately to open warfare between far right and far left "militias". Eventually Trump is forced from office, but takes up Putin's offer of asylum to set up a government in exile.

Personally I think that the day the government abolishes the 2nd amendment and comes after our guns is the day that war will begin.
The federal government is never going to abolish the Second Amendment , but wait a minute . I think you really meant the day that the Civil War starts is when the population of Mississippi , Alabama and Texas can't buy fully automatic and semi-automatic guns right ??? !!!

Idiocy and foaming-at-the-mouth lunacy would surely trigger it. We're on our way...

While that is definitely a good enough reason, it's not just those states.

If anyone starts a civil war, it will probably be far-right anti-government nutjobs.

Nope. It will be about water. Guaranteed. Water law in the west is very serious, and horrific wars have been fought over much less.
