Italy's government is under huge pressure due to the Middle East diaspora. Hundreds of thousands of refugees have strained the Italian Navy, all its social agencies, and has caused great unrest there.
The problems aren't confined to Italy. Portugal, Greece, Malta, and Spain are all have similar troubles. As I recall, there are over 3 million people who are now in refugee camps in those nations. I may be remembering an old number, too.
