There has been a rise in some gang related violence, however this has happened before and London's murder rate is still lower than it has been in the past.
There were 140 murders in London last year, which is not bad for a city of early 9 million, which has a further 4 million people commuting in to it every day abd has nearly 20 million international visitors a year.
In terms of murders, around a third are due to domestic violence incidents, with the rest either gang related or often alcohol or drug related.
In terms of the police, they have closed down a number of smaller police stations, and are moving police to larger stations including new state of the art patrol and custody suites. Many of the old Victorian police stations are expensive to run and upkeep and are not suited to modern policing.
As for knife crime, London Police have been up to Scotland to look at the work of the Violence Reduction Unit (VRU) which has been sucessful in significantly reducing knife crime.

In terms of extra funds for policing, the Government has allowed local authorities amd Mayors to raise ore funds themselves and the police in London are now going to see some extra funding.
A 5.1pc council tax increase will raise £49 million which will be spent on combating knife, boosting officer numbers and paying for a 2pc police officer pay rise.
£55 million raised from business rates - something the government has given the mayor control over - will alsi be handed to the Metropolitan Police.
An additional £5 million will be spent on recruiting new officers.
There will also be further investment in the London Fire Brigade.
Sounds like they need to enact some type of comprehensive knife control over there.
Still a LOT less people being murdered per year in London than most US cities I'll wager, must be doing something right, how many people are murdered in New York, Chicago or New Orleans every year?
