I love some of the high and mighty comments in this thread. LOL.

Plenty of people who aren't "violent criminals" have had brush ups with the law (misdemeanors, etc) that have NOTHING to do with how well they'd perform a job.

Plenty of people who aren't "irresponsible" have had their credit blow up on them (bad divorces, identity theft, young and didn't know better, etc).

I think that the background check should fit the position.

And, if you have an excellent rental and/or mortgage history, there is no reason that anyone should be bothered by a number on a credit report.

If you are a line cook with no access to the cash registers, who cares if your credit is bad, as long as you can cook and have a decent employment history?

If you are working in a closed office, as... oh... an admin assistant, who cares if you got arrested for attending a protest in college?

I mean, look how badly Equifax screwed up. It's not like the credit reporting agencies are any more "upstanding."

Let's be really honest. How much or how little credit and criminal background stuff affects a person is directly related to how wealthy they are already.

haha yeah.

This post is not directed at any posters in this thread because i think some of them made good points.

But I cannot understand this whole, "my little restaurant is too good for you" attitude. lol

They just want to cook, they just want to work in the warehouse. What seems to be the big deal?

I 100000000% agree with your last paraph.

All of that sanctimonious BS goes out the window when one has to be bonded for a job, no?

Hold on a second because you're mixing in PRIVATE background and credit checks with GOVERNMENT ones so that's not having it both ways.

Yeah... it's weird. I am not trying to bash Trump here (I promise), but he's filed BK multiple times and it has apparently hurt his standing to borrow more money with his company, but it did not stop him from becoming POTUS and he does not seem to be held back in any major way.

So, I stand by my assessment. How much negative credit or any criminal actions... Martha Stewart seems to be doing fine despite her stint in prison... affect you depends on how wealthy you are already.

well, in South Dakota, Purchasing, possessing or consuming an alcoholic beverage while under the age of 21 is a Class 2 misdemeanor.

I still cannot see why a person with a class 2 misdemeanor cannot be be hired as a Computer Network Support Specialist at age of 31.

Punishment for life? Seems unnecessary.

Case by case seems reasonable in my humble opinion.

It's not sanctimonious... and most jobs do not require bonding. I doubt most folks mind if they cannot get bonded jobs due to background checks, but come on... so many jobs are just not needing the level of digging into people's private business that they seem to be availing themselves of.

There's an entire industry that sells these services to employers, which is why they are used in the first place for jobs where one doesn't need some sort of high security clearance or bonding.

I get why a bail bondsman or a housekeeper would need to be bonded for insurance reasons, but why does a dude who washes windows need to be bonded?

Those guys work on crews. Is he going to steal a massive scaffolding or a cleaning kit?

LOL.

All of those checks is not something new. You knew that, and still you CHOSE to be a criminal. No sympathy here.
One of my friends grew up in a 'weed house' , that is, where his parents had a small-scale operation growing weed when he was born and as he grew up.

He really didn't CHOOSE to be a criminal; I suppose you could argue that he should've turned his parents in and sent himself to a state-owned juvenile facility. In any event, when the state police raided his home when he was a teenager, they didn't really ask him about his choices, they just threw him in prison as an adult.

He did eventually get out, and he's had a hell of a time over the past 10 years finding a job that will hire him and a landlord that will accept him. But he is in college now, trying to put a decent life together for himself, no thanks to people with your attitude.

Any criminal record and/or credit check will reveal those who have an official record that they cannot be trusted.

yep. It looks like only the poors have to be punished for life. I don't think this is fair.
