City computers in Atlanta are being held hostage by a ransomware attack. For almost a week city employees can not access their computers. Citizens can not pay their municipal bills. Police are back to hand writing their reports and tickets.

Hackers are demanding $51,000.00 in Bitcoin in exchange for the city to regain access to their computers. However,

Quote:
Some major systems were not affected, including those for 911 calls and control of wastewater treatment.
NYT

Quote:
More than six days after a ransomware attack shut down the city of Atlanta's online systems, officials here are still struggling to keep the government running without many of their digital processes and services.
CNN

Quote:
"This is much bigger than a ransomware attack, this really is an attack on our government," Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms told a news conference. "We are dealing with a (cyber) hostage situation."
CNBC

This may be happening in Atlanta but, every city and every computer is subject to the same type of attack.
Hackers could bring this country to it's knees.

All this on line commerce is great but the security has not caught up. Maybe it’s time to put financial transactions back to paper and cash. People need jobs, maybe it’s time to start filing paper and locking it up in file cabinets again.

Sadly, we’re woefully unprepared. Our government should have been working on this possibility of foreign intrusion back in the 90’s.

Pretty spooky stuff! Let's hope that officials in Atlanta quickly get to the bottom of this and throw the hackers in jail for life.

The NSA should be helping with this. The USA built the damn internet, they should know how to police it.

Wow, this is scary. It's hard to believe this hasn't been top of the headlines for the last week.

And you are right, this is where the real danger lies right now. It's going to be the way the next war is fought. And we have given over so much of our lives and finances and work and government and business to digital technology that it wouldn't be hard to bring this country to its knees.

This is why cyber hacking into our systems by foreign governments is such an urgent issue. No matter what side of the political aisle you're on, we need to see this as the true threat that it is.
