There are valid concerns with most of the US positions on trade with China but rather than proceed cautiously we take a very public shot across the bow of Chinese trade. Public face and national pride are very important in China and I don't see the US winning any publicly waged trade battle. The Obama approach of establishing a free trade agreement with China's Asian neighbors (TPP) also would have served as leverage against China but that was DOA at day 1 of the Trump presidency.
Hard to see how any of Trump's actions will help anyone but the few protected US industries while simultaneously hurting many, many others with the overall net effects being negative.
Trump seems to act without knowledge, forethought, or concern for the consequences of his actions. There is no cautious planning towards short and long term objectives that benefit all. Rather, he lies, blames, belittles and endlessly complains while recklessly lashing out and re-acting with little to no knowledge of context.
China is the opposite, always analyzing, planning, and methodically preparing for potential change both now and in the future. Trump's decision to antagonize Canada, the EU, China, and other countries can have no consequence except to weaken the country nationally and internationally. Trump's nationalist and isolationist values may seem appealing in the short term to the average blue collar worker, but in the long term it is those same people who will be standing in line at the food kitchen.
China is the fourth largest country in the world, after the USA, and it has roughly four times the population as the USA. The big difference between the two populations is that China is very familiar with making sacrifice for the benefit of all, whereas no one in the USA is prepared to sacrifice anything unless it benefits the individual.
Even though China seems to be at a disadvantage because of population size, I think the USA will lose trade war with China because of individual and collective greed, and an exaggerated sense of entitlement.
Sadly I think you are right.........We need to stand up to chinas illegal trade practices, but we collectively do not have the stamina or the will.

China's culture is founded in sacrifice for the greater good and equality between individuals. A good example is the one child law to manage population growth. Everyone sacrificed for the greater good. As a society, they are equipped to collectively respond to international interference at an economic level and will do without until they can develop a new solution.
Trump, on the other hand, thinks that penalizing China will result in the population demanding that the Chinese government cave to Trump's demands. The result will be that China will work harder and make greater sacrifice until they have a solution that by-passes the USA. That is what all countries are doing in response to Trump's decision that "Trade Wars are Fun".

China deserves anything it gets..............They are trying to destroy our industries.........
Uuuh; didn't Trump already state unequivalently that the U.S. had already LOST the trade war with China?
Did I miss something or does what Trump say not matter any more..... Just ask'n 'cause what Trump "said" got you into this stupid trade war in the first place....er........wasn't it?

That 150 billion in tariffs is nonsense in relation to China. You know that right? We imported just shy of a billion in steel from them last year. And even less then that of aluminum. China exports very little steel and aluminum to us, but a lot to other countries. So if they slapped 3 billion back at us...they're actually hitting us harder then we are them. Think about that.
Because a hour ago we slapped 25% tariffs on more then 1,300 goods made in China. On 50 billion in trade.
Expect them to respond the same. So all the crying and stock market stuff on the 3 billion in tariffs they put back on us? Expect another set of people crying-only 20X worse.
Wait. We haven't started any tariffs (besides steel / aluminum). We just keep threatening to do it.
Or did I miss that Trump DID something versus tweeting something.
