Or perhaps for being dead? Since Trump seems to think a pardon fixes everything, maybe that will bring those killed by police back to life?

Don't like this, either.. Sends the totally wrong message that if you're Rich and/or Famous, or know someone who is, justice works different. ALL Americans should get the same access to pitch cases for pardons/commutations.
This is a brilliant political move by Trump. Its an easy Win - Win for Trump.

NFL players claim that the criminal justice system in the US systematically targets innocent African Americans. As such, the players ought to be able to easily present a list of people who have been unfairly prosecuted, or cases in which the punishment is overly harsh for the crime.

Trump is asking for a list of cases that support the players' claims. Should the players be unable to present a list of relevant cases, their "cause" will be demonstrated to be substantially false. If the players can show legitimate instances of injustice, Trump can use his pardon power and will thus appear to be reasonable and not at all the racist that his detractors claim he is.

Yet, you, and President Trump, seem to be thinking: many NFL players are Black. Hence, since they are Black, they must know other Blacks in prison.

No. Well, yes, many players are of course black.

But, that is irrelevant.

The point is, the players protesting are claiming the administration of justice is horribly unjust.

The players do not need to personally know any convict to be able to support their claim. They made the claim. Let them support it.

How is this in any way unfair or devious?

If they can show actual instances of injustice, then Trump can issue pardons.

As I said, its a win - win situation for Trump.
