And us Gen Xers as well. I've never understood the whole 'winners vs losers' mindset. Life isn't a race or a contest.

From what I understand, my democratic socialist friends want:

1) medicare for all

2) free college tuition

3) guaranteed living wages for all

4) free child care for working families

5) the abolishment of ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement)

I am in favor of 1) and 4), because the current systems we have in these areas are broken, and because the adoption of these remedies would mostly benefit families and working people. To my mind, 2), 3) would be prohibitively expensive and conducive to freeloading. 5) is simply fatuous, since it would amount to the virtual elimination of our national borders.

Now, does this make me a omigod omigod socialist? Or does it simply reflect my willingness to seek rational.solutions to some of our major national problems?

I would urge everyone who is serious about these things to stop thinking in terms of labels, and using examples culled from dictatorial, authoritarian regimes, and start thinking about how we can make life better for all Americans.
Geez, so literally government babysitting for you? How about don't have kids if you cant afford it. And why would my tax dollars need to go to your babysitter, that is beyond ridiculous.

That's how it works. You should pay for what you want. The stuff I want should be free. That's most people's idea of a mixed economy.

I don't want wars, but I end up paying for them. I don't want corporate welfare, but I end up paying for that as well. I don't want people incarcerated for possessing a plant, but I pay for that, too.

Why can't we put our money towards things that help millions of average, hard working, taxpaying Americans instead?

Yeah, I know, that's too socialist for you.

Nobody wants those things and we all pay for them, but they are supposedly beneficial on a national level and supposedly help protect our freedom and economic well being.

Go have kids on your own dime. Just because someone wants to procreate, doesn't mean its a net benefit to a world full of kids who don't get proper educations or parental supervision, and a world thats already over populated and being drained of natural resources.

So you think wars are beneficial, but helping to raise and educate our citizens isn't?

You make my point for me. Thank you.

What exactly do you think I meant by "nobody wants them" and they are "supposedly beneficial" you think that implies they are beneficial? Its like you aren't even trying.

Do you have any idea how much daycare/preschool costs for young working families just starting out? It is not the fault of young people that proces have risen disproportionately to wages, so that both parents are forced to work just to afford the necessities of life.

I am 72 years old, and I remember when I was just beginning my working life. In those days, it was easy to find a job that covered things like rent, food, transportation, etc. Moms could stay home and didn’t necessarily have to work. Kids were safe playing outside, roaming the neighborhood, walking to school. Policemen walked around and knew everybody.

We live in a different world today. Young folks have a financial gun to their head, any way they turn: miss a payment? The credit ratings agencies nail them. Want an education? Take out a hefty student loan and make onerous payments for twenty years. Commit a misdemeanor? Presto — you’ve got a criminal record that follows you forever.

The cutthroat nature of economics in this country is turning our young people into cynics and chiselers. They work hard and try to get ahead, but there is always a rich person cutting them off and reaping the rewards of inherited wealth or family prestige.

It’s time for us to start showing a little compassion and taking meaningful steps to restore feasible economic opportunity for our younger citizens. Providing subsidized daycare so that one partner’s salary doesn’t totally go for childcare is a great place to start!

We have a watered down gene pool that cant support themselves, and arent even borderline at the same level of common sense and education of the folks of your generation. Why do we want to promote more of the same. Let people who have figured out how to be successful on their own have kids so we can raise a new generation of kids whos parents have the time, resources, and ability to care for and educate them. We seem to be hell bent on lowering the bar.
