The only thing I found offensive about Apu I was the Kwiki-Mart was the Dali Lana like portrayal of the owner of the big one. It was even in a fictionalized Himalayas.

People need to get over Apu. Seriously. The Simpsons makes fun of everyone.

It would be like comparing The Brady Bunch to watching Howard Stern.

Best thing Trey Parker and Matt Stone did was come up with their awesome disclaimer. It's amazing how easily they can hide behind the warning that their program, due to its content, should not be viewed by anyone.

Groening's mistake is that he didn't warn hysterical, hypersensitive snowflakes that his show, being a freaking cartoon and all, is fictional and people need to keep that in mind when viewing it. Like South Park treats anyone or any group other than Muslims (because Comedy Central are a bunch of pu$$ies) nicely? Their primary black character is named Token, ffs.

Simpsons need a better disclaimer, since some people need to be told that cartoons are fictional.

Once more - even having this discussion means Americans are doomed. If we actually take time to ponder the cultural damage done by a background character in a cartoon, we are not meant to survive for long.

These are the same people who got all offended by the things Archie Bunker said on All in the Family. They are dolts who fail to realize the intent of programs like this is not to celebrate the offensive stereotypes, but rather to fight them via ridicule.

this also reminds me of the controversy surrounding jar jar binks when he first appeared in the star wars saga.

This is what happens when a society fetishizes and weaponizes victimhood: you can claim to be offended by a stereotype on a TV show that has been an unrepentant showcase of stereotypes for 3 decades without incident -- even when the character in question is portrayed mostly in a sympathetic/positive light as Apu is -- and people will leap to action to assuage your mock offense.

Um South Park fully parodies actual people and is very vulgar (not that I hate it, I'm a fan actually) while Simpsons is not and often don't lampoons the celebrities, rather topics.

OK, most Eastern Indians that I have met come across as nice people who are quite intelligent. But wow, is the PC stuff going a little insane? And all the nice things I have to say about these people........Whoa, the quality of most of the business ran by these people is a little unimpressive, to say the least.
