I don't know that it's "pandering". It's the kind of thing that happens all the time, because people who have the ability to help WANT to help when there's a good cause.

A dog that teenagers try to burn alive receives thousands of dollars of care and is helped to a full recovery by crowd source funding, or a single very generous donor, or a nonprofit steps in.

A vet who had his specially made wheelchair stolen gets it replaced through the same heartfelt generosity.

Same exact thing.

You may scoff at them and say that's pandering, too.

Jessica McClure got all that attention because she fell into a well.

Private Ryan was saved through absolutely heroic efforts of the military to save this specific young man, over others, because 4 of his brothers had also died in the war.
