Yep, it was. You likened "joe shmoe" to the protesters. Why else would it matter if there was a "controversial figure" eating at the restaurant if there were no one there to start controversy--your question would be moot if there were no controversy, if everyone just eats and leaves.

Purely from the restaurant owner's perspective, would you prefer that a controversial figure come dine with you that you will have to protect, or would you prefer that joe shmoe who pretty much gets along with others come dine in your establishment?

And actually, the restaurant did remove the protesters. They apparently weren't customers.

What would you have had the restaurant do that they didn't do?

I cannot give an answer at this time since I had never actually thought about that question. Unless you want a knee-jerk response, which I doubt.
