On social media now adays they ask you to post who you are going to vote for? And then it becomes a war zone.

Not really. I think two opposing social philosophies have divided the country: individual liberty vs collective authoritarianism. (these are general categories and there are various sub-flavors, dividing us even more).

It certainly aids the division yes. Though largely because of the echo chamber effect.

"Leftist", part of the problem right there. I mean even going with that premise if Fox is the #1 news network isn't it the "rightist" MSM?

We were always divided, all social media did was make it easier to see that. It’s those who use it that control the way it’s perceived. In different settings around the world, media has united and divided the public. Whether it’s for the better or the worse, that’s for you to decide.

I do. I think the 24hr news cycle and being able to only watch channels that agree with your worldview really widened the divide. Then the internet allowed people to search out only news that supports their views. No matter the topic, you can read article after article that supports your mindset and bashes the opposing view. Social media only exasperated it. You can choose to hide your friends whose ideas you disagree with. People love to express their opinions and argue on social media, which seems to only galvanize their positions. People would never speak to each other face to face with the bravado and aggression that they do online. I really wonder what will bridge the gap at this point.

The outrage industry is fueling it. MSM contributing big time. Identity politics is a major problem also.

We have always been divided politically and there have been some very bad times before.

But I do think the division is becoming increasingly worse for a number of reasons:
1. social media has an effect. Crazy as it sounds, I know people who are no longer friends because of politics

2. Three 24/7 incredibly biased one-sided cable news networks giving people only one side of the news and ignoring the other side. Not to mention biased talk radio.

3. the parties have become sided. There used to be a liberal and conservative wing to both parties that used to be able to negotiate and seek compromises. That is largely gone now.
