On paper, I don't think it's a bad move.

The thing is that the countries that are doing single payer successfully are generally much more homogeneous. It's pretty easy to vote for UHC when pretty much everyone is of the same tribe. You also don't have the massive gaps between the rich and the poor that you do in the US.

We also have way too many people employed in the back office and administrative functions of health care to ever really cut the bureaucracy down. The livelihoods of too many people are dependent on those jobs.

We have been having no problem killing jobs for automation and offshoring so why not cut this excess too. It will have to happen eventually.

Poor people need to just accept the fact that they do not merit significant outlays for their medical care. Maybe we can put them down like old pets. The profits big pharma shall not be impinged upon nor shall we require hospitals to disclose pricing. You get what you get and don't get upset.

Republicans. We took a bad situation and made laws to make it more favorable for corporations. (See Billy Tauzin.)

Could not be more wrong. Good thing the OP isn't running for anything.

The GOP is freaking people out with their talk of cutting pre-existing coverage and medicare.

"...The stakes of the November 2018 elections are high for many reasons, but no issue is more important to voters than healthcare. In fact, NBC News and The Wall Street Journal found that healthcare was the No. 1 issue in a poll of potential voters..."

Pre-existing is part of Obamacare. It may be impossible to force it on insurance companies if ACA is killed. Trump promised a replacement plan better than ACA and there is none.

Most people are in great health, have no serious chronic health issues, therefore health care is not a serious issue with them. Politicians in office can say the same, so they're not motivated to do much of anything about health care, either.
