Curious to hear the general consensus on this one

a lot of people argue that the libertarian Theory of the free market is the best way to run the country.

In my opinion that's exactly what we have right now because corporations are bribing our politicians to create laws so de facto corporations are running our country.

Via the principles of the open and free market they control the lawmakers.

is this not a free-market Libertarian Theory in practice?

I always hear them say: let the free market decide... and I would argue the free market decided to pay off politicians and de facto controls our country

I think you need to brush up on the free market.

Just look at the federal budget. 2/3 goes to entitlement programs.

That’s your answer.

So Americans collectively give a dollar and get back $0.67? What exactly is the answer here?

One of the things I like the most about Trump. Other politicians (and celebrities) let the media bully them into saying whatever aligns with their broken narrative. Then the Donald comes around and shoves it right back in their faces and does things of his own accord! #orangehairdontcare

I would read Manufacturing Consent or maybe save your energy and watch Requiem for an American dream. I think Noam Chomsky has a fairly coherent view on the OPs questions. The short answer it seems to me is that corporations run the government, but those corporations are run by people, a concentrated few and extremely powerful people, but still people, nonetheless.

No.

If Americans "collectively" gave a dollar, there would be no need for entitlement programs.

So, what makes you think entitlement programs could ever be not needed? Some kind of a sci-fi fantasy where everyone has exactly the same health, wealth, longevity and treatment from society?

Big money runs the government which corporations have in spades. Along WITH lobbyists to ensure that the laws favor corporations.
