I live in bay area CA which is flooded with street corner leeches. Well, I was eating at a fast food place near an intersection and observed that, after every green light, the on-duty beggar would walk over and press the cross-walk button. I'm guessing they do it to hold the cars up as long as possible and as often as possible to maximize their income. To make matters worse, they were doing it during rush hour at an intersection that's constantly backed up all the way up an exit and into the highway. Then, at the end of the day, they always leave a pile of trash on the corner.
Why do drivers continue to subsidize these career leeches?
Those crosswalk buttons don't even work in most cities. They show "walk" and "don't walk" automatically with the lights whether someone pushes the button or not.
They light up the walk sign and trigger the audio meant to help the visually impaired know where to cross. The buttons rarely change the timing and don't put pedestrian in front of the line.

I don’t know about homeless, but there’s plenty of poor people who cross active intersections all times of the day and couldn’t care less if you have to stop to avoid hitting them

We had a cop hit a drunk J walking transient about midnight. I really felt for that poor cop just sitting on the curb with his face in his hands.
I see them do that here too and it's really annoying as it throws off lights that are usually synced up.
I have given to charities constantly but not directly to anyone looking for booze/drug money.
Around here, traffic lights are synced so you hit as many red lights as possible...its nuts!
I think they do this on purpose in some of the areas where homeless stand and panhandle, this ensures cars are always stopped there.
