Some folks may not 'love him' or 'hate him', being reasonable, some folks simply may not view him as being suitable as POTUS.
I don’t hate him for his personal views but rather because of all the damage he is doing to our alliances and our country. It will take years to repair and a very astute and special new president.
This a question for people that live in NYC that probably have more knowledge of Trump than others in the country. I recall Michael Bloomberg saying "I'm a New Yorker and I know a con when I see one"
Do most New Yorkers like or despise Trump?
Despise. Maybe a few people in Staten Island/Queens like him, but not in Manhattan.

I can only relate that my neighbor, who was born in and spent most of his adult life in NYC, cannot stand Donald Trump.
No, DT is not nor has ever been widely loved or even liked not just in New York, but much of the Northeast as well. We've had his number for some time; but the rest of you keep going on about "he's my president, I voted for him; I have to support him....", or whatever.
DT simply put is a nasty piece of work both in his professional and business lives. He is like Rudy Giuliani and other now famous (and or wealthy to certain degrees) New Yorkers that came up from the lower or middle classes. In short DT et al never forgot the streets of Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx or where ever they grew up; and it is apparent in everything they do.
The man has always been a megalomaniac which sort of suited the 1980's when things were all about wealth and so forth. You'd see DT and (then) wife Ivana Marie Trump, in pages of magazines like W, Vogue, etc... or read about them in the gossip sheets (such as Page Six in New York Post). But it was all a bit trying too hard to push themselves (or rather DT) into certain social and or business circles where Donald Trump simply was "not quite one of us".
DT loved attending charity social/benefit events; which is something *very* big to high society in New York and elsewhere; but the man was famous for being miserly. Say what you want about the Astor, Rockefeller, and other families/persons of great wealth, but most all give back something some how to those less fortunate. DT would have none of it; his only care was seeing his name attached to something and getting some sort of payment or benefit out of it in return. Even the late Brooke Astor tried and eventually gave up getting DT to part with his money for any sort of charitable purpose.
What DT became known for is pretty much what you've seen all along; a braggart, common, vulgar little man who as also a bully and philanderer. After publicly insulting his first wife in public, DT went on to do the same to the next.
His insistence on slapping that "Trump" name on all and everything just seems common and vulgar. Yes, people like Geffen, Koch, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt have had hospitals, colleges, museums, cultural institutions (museums, concert halls, etc...) named after them, but their number pales in comparison to the Trump "brand".
Business wise it became clear as in DT's personal life nothing was ever his fault. Take two of the top failures:
That was rich coming from Bloomberg. This is someone who tried to (the courts threw it out) ban fountain drinks over 16 oz as a means of controlling people's weight. In reality, however, this was nothing but a typical Bloomberg/NYC money grab. Indeed, had this ban gone into effect, everyone knew that people would just buy multiple 16 oz drinks to get their fix, which would lead to higher tax revenues for the city. He knows a con because he is a con.
NYC raised me. I am a fan of Trump, though I don't always agree with his methods.
Bloomberg isn't even from New York.
He's from the Boston metro.
He didn't move to New York until he was already an adult.
