If the EC had been left as originally designed it would work very well.
But, States screwed it up when they started calling in with all their EC votes going to the candidate that got the majority of the popular vote.
If the EC voted by district then the point of the EC would still hold. Each district would go to the district majority vote.
Barring that, I agree that the EC should be abandoned to a straight popular vote.

If did away with Electorals.

Instead awarded 1 point to the winner in each State Congressional district's


If one Candidate can achieve 70% of the popular vote they automatically win

&

Throw in rank choice voting

&

Allow Territories to vote and count as one point for the majority winner in that U.S. Territory

Think it would make for a spicy Election.

To eliminate The electoral College will require a Constitutional amendment.
This will not be easy, nor fast.
The individual States could more easily correct the statutory changes that have all but crippled the EC original intent.
