I wonder what would have happened if the hoax perpetrator was a white conservative with no political connections, claiming to have been attacked by two black guys shouting black power slogans.
Yes, but that's just one of the crimes he committed. He did a slew of other things as well, which would have landed the common man and woman in jail for a long time. He utilized the USPS to send a threat letter. He claimed the attack was carried out by pro-Trump / Republicans. Doing so, he instilled into the public hatred towards that group of people. And your sitting here saying that this was ok and no big deal of a thing to do. You're as wacked as this Smollett clown is.
I never said it was ok and no big deal. The law sets out the penalties for the crimes Smollett allegedly committed. I believe those penalties are reasonable and rational. I think that many posters on this thread want penalties that aren't reasonable, and I also believe that our legal system is sound. The state attorney's office in Illinois looked at the penalties outlined by the law, and saw a way to achieve those penalties without going to the expense of a trial. And this trial would have been hugely expensive. Cutting a deal was responsible. Cutting a deal without muzzling Smollett and his team was irresponsible. We'll see how the FBI investigation into the letter goes.
And calling me "wacked" is a personal attack. You need to refrain from those.
People would be a lot less outraged if he would have had to admit his guilt. It probably would die down a lot quicker. The fact that he is still claiming he is innocent, and even threatening to sue the CPD, is adding a lot of fuel to the fire.
He shows no remorse, so whatever outrage and further investigation by the feds, is well earned.
This is it right here. Had Smollett walked out of court the other day and up to the microphone and said “I am sorry for my part in this, I will learn from it and hope that everyone can move on” I think America would have done just that. But instead he doubled-down and made it worse.
We'll see what the FBI turns up in that investigation. But IF he did it, he sent crushed ibuprofen to himself. While it would have been to further a fraud, it didn't actually endanger anyone.
Shaking my head is disbelief, Mr Ridge living in another world, one that contains no reality...

Agreed. 2nd only to my anger that Smollett perpetrated this hoax in the 1st place, is the fact that he is taking a holier-than-thou position after the SA office dropped the charges.
16 felonies equal many years. You make it sound like he got caught littering.
No, I make it sound like filing a false police report, which carries a maximum penalty of $10,000 and some minimal jailtime which he would have likely avoided by performing public service and possibly agreeing to some probation. The state got the $10,000 and the public service.

This. His outrage and declaration of victimhood, after he has been given a complete pass, is what infuriates me. I can not believe that idiot prosecutor did not demand as part of the deal a complete admission of the events as they actually happened. That is the normal procedure for any plea bargain.
