People are warning us, will we be smart enough to listen? Praying it won't happen here.

Well if John Stossel says it -- then I guess we better all listen.

I'm impressed that he hasn't drowned in a bucket of water yet.

Educate yourself. The USA is on its way to becoming Venezuela now due to GOP corruption. Socialism did not destroy the Venezuelan economy. Being a petrol state under corrupt dictatorial leadership a la Russia style did them in.

If only people would turn off the Faux news. Venezuela crashed because of government corruption and because they didn’t invest in oil infrastructure when times were good. Also, the Venezuelans are importing oils because their crude can’t be pumped and managed without that because it’s too heavy. They have debt to Russia and China so they are essentially importing oil at market price, and sending out the other end for free. Oil output from Venezuela is less than half the capacity right now and they sit on the worlds largest reserve. If they can’t sell oil, they can’t import food.
Simple.

There are a lot of us who agree. What I find astonishing is so many people who benefit from capitalism (mind you it's more of a broken crony capitalism with all the government interference) are seeking to embrace an economic system which has proven time and time again to have disastrous results where ever it has been tried and those very same people are ignoring the millions of people already living in those conditions who are either fleeing them or seeking to flee them.

Socialism, Marxism and communism may all sound good in theory, especially for those in the lower economic classes BUT the truth of these economic systems is they tend to bring everyone who is not in power down to the lowest common denominator which places the majority of people in the lowest economic class.

I have a difficult time grasping that people would intentionally want to have harder economic hardships than they already do BUT as Frédéric Bastiat wrote:

Stossel is a statist. He likes his socialism a very specific kind of way.

Ah yes, another one of these pathetic threads.

The cons here like to tell everyone that it's not good to turn the US or any US state into something socialist. Like, Venezuela.

Well, OK. But nobody wants to turn anything into another Venezuela anyway.

What many US liberals want is something more like just about anything in Western Europe. Or Canada.

Are Europe and Canada failures, like Venezuela? Hardly.

So why do cons keep starting threads like this?

Because the cons like to give us straw men and tell everybody that the liberals want to turn the US into something that liberals don't want to turn the US into. It's a classic case of fear mongering.

So, let's try this again: Liberals want to turn the US into something more like Canada or Western Europe, not Venezuela.

Got it?

Instead of trying to turn the US into your ideal, utopian, unicorns and rainbows fantasy land, why don't you and those who think like you do move to the countries that are more in line with your economic beliefs? Why do you insist that many others MUST live according to your ideals when you have the option of moving instead of forcing everyone else to change?

Selfish much?
