Esquire magazine just debuted its March 2019 issue, and the cover shines a spotlight on what it’s like for “an American boy” to grow up “white, middle class, and male in the era of social media, school shootings, toxic masculinity, #MeToo, and a divided country.”

I think it’s because most of the readers are white. They already know how to do American white so they want to see different. Different is interesting to read about.

Seems a lot of the comments are people upset that not only is it a white male, but it's Black History Month. Completely missing the fact that it's the March issue, lol.

The core of this is in what the kid said:
"I know what I can't do, but I don't know what I can do."

The kid doesn't want to start a fight with anyone. He just wants to know how to thread his way through a life in a society that's radically changed but hasn't given him a rule book on expected conduct.

I can understand that. I was raised in a lilly-white town at a time when there was only one black family living here, anyone who was gay had to cover or leave, and all that was so settled I could never understand why folks of different colors couldn't get along.

I learned why that was once I left and joined the Navy, but I had to learn the rules on my own, and if I hadn't been in the Navy, I may have never learned them at all.

Knowing a few of those rules- what is expected of him as a white boy- is something he wants and needs. Ignorant offense to another is still an offense. Once offended, it's very easy for hatred to develop.

I think it's something that's good to be addressed and discussed. Plastering over the hatred and ignorance by not talking about it won't help ease these problems. It will only prolong them and in the prolonging, will infect another generation of kids.
No little kid sees color. They have to be taught to become bigots, and the kid on the cover doesn't want to be an unintentional bigot. Talking about the root problem will help kill the flower, I think, and it needs to be done much more now if we don't want all these stupid divisions to linger on forever.

It is Black History Month, but black folks' history has been largely determined by white folks. Change that, and you change the history of the future.
