I mentioned to a co-worker, just kidding, that I wish the government would just send us a either a bill for the taxes we owed or just send us a check for an overpayment. I said that since they have all the pertinent info, anyway, why put people through the agony of having to compile the paperwork, fill out the forms, and in many cases, pay out even more money to an accountant or tax preparation service. If someone thinks the government made an error, then they could contest it with supporting documentation.

Again, I was just kidding, but does anyone else besides my co-worker think this might be a good idea?

This might work for your run-of-the-mill employees, but independent business folks are still going to have to file returns, as they almost always have some costs of doing business.

You woud need to simplify the tax code and would be facing stiff opposition from lobbying groups for tax lawyers, CPA's and tax preparers like Turbo Tax, H&R Block etc.

"...put people through the agony..."
that is the first thing ALL governments
do to make it clear Who owns What.

no deductions would destroy some charities.
they Depend on that Deduction. yes, one could give After the 10% "off the top" take,
but not enough would to make up the difference, especially for Local Charities.

I guess there is no chance that your co-worker has a clue that the "refund money" is money that people overpay to the Government and the Government uses that money until they are forced to "rebate" to those who overpaid.

I don't get "refunds" and haven't gotten any refunds in almost 20 years.
I'm in the minority and understand that - my goal is always to and equalize what I will owe with what I pay monthly in Taxes. Why should I allow the Government to take MY money and use it for a year instead of understanding the LAW and attempting to make it come out as close to equal as possible?

I feel the same way about the Census. You want me to fill this out? You already know everything about my income, race, housing etc. Don't waste my time.

For married folks, how would the IRS know whether you want to file Married Filing Jointly or Married Filing Separately.

There's no reason for us to file a return. They already know everything that goes into the forms. It's like they just dare us to get it wrong so they can audit.
