Just the other day, I received a letter from my medical provider that basically read:

" Celebrate National Doctor Month, please send a gift of $100- $2500 to thank your Doctor for the service they provided throughout the year".

This letter came directly from my medical provider and was no scam or hoax.

After reading the letter, I was steaming mad and could not believe a hospital was soliciting money from patients to give to well paid Doctors!

If it was from a hospital, it sounds like it was a way to solicit donations to the hospital itself, rather than money going directly to a doctor. I work at a research hospital that is constantly sending out solicitations for donations to support our research mission, and it's not that unusual for patients to make a donation in honor of a specific doctor to show their appreciation for the care they've received.

But I have to say that I don't think I've ever seen one quite like this, and I do understand why it feels off-putting.

That's horrible!

I recently got a letter from my doctor saying she was moving to a concierge practice, and would require $2,000 a year membership fee. (This is addition to the $900 a month I pay for an Obamacare plan with a high deductible.)

P.S. Reminds me of my first job, where management asked staff to pitch in $25 each so the company could present the CEO with a thank-you check at Christmas time.

Apparently this is practiced world wide. Never heard of it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Doctors%27_Day

It seems most countries contribute small gifts, lunch, flowers etc. to a doctor. But it seems in the US a thousand dollar gift is appropriate. Not surprised.

No, the letter said specifically the money was for the Doctor.

Who is your medical provider, an independent MD, a medical practice, a hospital or something else?

Was the letter on the MD’s letterhead?

Hospital Foundations routinely solicit tax- deductible donations.

Pretty cheeky they even had an amount they wanted on there. I would send a penny and not one of those shiny new ones either but one you find on the floor on a men’s room kind. Include a letter saying let me express my appreciation for your letter asking for a gift with this donation.
