Oh,oh...we have an etymology rule breaker! Is that as serious as a vocabulary infraction?

I don’t think I have ever used the term assault rifle here. But most trace it back to WWII when the Germans used the word to describe the StG44. If you have a beef with the word, take it up with them.

When I`m educated will I become appreciative of mass shootings?

Regardless of which side of the fence you're on, this is a great article

Take a few minutes to educate yourself
You can blame "assault weapon" as the colloquial for all the Kalashnikov Klones on Hitler, Gun Digest, and Guns & Ammo. The name comes from the Sturmgewehr 44, and "assault rifle" was popularized by the gun magazines back in the 70s and 80s as the term for the AR-15 or anything that looked like it. As a result of the gun magazines using the term, the AR-15 was used to write California's definition for an assault rifle.

"Assault rifle" or "assault weapon" are absolutely correct to use in everyday conversation for these "modern sporting rifles" <snicker> as a result.

It has been my experience that those who split hairs over the term tend to be trying to deflect or stop discussions on the presence of these rifles in modern society, because they have no logical argument to use in reply when questions are raised.

and we are all guilty of a lack of precision with our language.
All righty, lets be precise. When Gene Stoner designed the AR15,it was expressly with military applications in mind. It was a weapon built with the intent of being taken into the field by troops and killing enemy soldiers.
But you gun huggers want to hide behind hunting, or sport shooting and don’t want to admit that, when a person takes an AR15 into a school or movie theater and mows down innocent people, it is being used EXACTLY how it’s designers intended it to be used. It’s a tool you will now say, yes it is and it’s a tool that does a good job of what it’s built to do.

Who cares about the semantics or for what purposes a gun was designed, the possession therof need not be justified to anyone, least of all someone with their own (i.e. govt employees)

Most criminals commit crimes using a HANDGUN. Rifles, include AR-15 (which isn't an assault weapon, btw) are rarely used. That is according to the FBI. The reasons handguns are used is because they are very easy to conceal. Rifles are not easy to conceal, so only the rare, high profile losers uses them as they want to commit suicide by cop so don't care.

When did this become about crime? It was started as a vocabulary lesson for the ignorant.
