Asked bluntly if he wants to “tariff” Vietnam, Trump did not say no.
“Well, we’re in discussions with Vietnam. Vietnam is almost the single worst – much smaller than China, much, but it’s almost the single worst abuser of everybody,” eliciting a “wow” from his interviewer.
I love Vietnam. Beautiful country, very clean and the people are warm and welcoming. I am especially fond of Dalat.
That said if trade agreements between our nations are poorly written or abused, then we should address the problem. The USA should not be used as the world's ATM.
The 1 thing we should never have done is granted China, Most favored Nation Status.
You do know that most favored nation status simply means China is treated like we treat other countries in terms of trade. It doesn’t mean we give China any special treatment. Why do you like Vietnam but not China? Vietnam historically has fallen in and out of China’s political control, but culturally it’s very much Chinese. Know the history if you love it so much.
Trump has just figured out that firms are leaving China for Viet Nam, Thailand, etc........where he hasn't imposed tariffs.
Let's just say -- he hasn't thought this through -- lol.
China is moving up the production scale. The tariffs are helping China make needed reform and these low end manufacturing jobs are destined to leave China anyway. The tariffs are pushing the move faster. But nothing is coming back to the us. Sorry old fat man.

Yes and no. It was granted to China to help them get a leg up. Before that the US was a very limited market to them.
Vietnam and Vietnamese people have very little in common other than being Asian. Vietnamese people are polite to a fault. Chinese, at least mainlanders are rude and have few if any manners. One need only fly with a plane load of mainlanders. Spitting on the floor is not unusual. Rules apply to everyone else. I have met very few with a favorable opinion of mainlanders. Chinese tourists can be vulgar, rude and obnoxious. They make Americans look like saints.
The Vietnamese are a wonderful people. Very neat and clean. They may share a history but that doesn't make them the same. You want to know a people? Visit their country. Ride on a plane that is majority Vietnamese then fly on plane that is majority Mainland Chinese.

LOL - America is a wealthy country, it is generally going to import more from countries that supply cheap labour than it exports to them.
Care to define "wealth?" It used to be that the US's industrial might made it wealthy but with the loss of so much manufacturing it must be something else. Maybe it's our Swiss made intaglio currency printing presses?

Did you really go to Vietnam? I won't say their "manners" are better than Chinese. In fact worse in many cases.
Their customs officers ask for money openly, something that never happens in China.

Vietnam is a growing threat in trade... If one isn't going to be honest about it then one shouldn't lie about it... Vietnam is a Chinese alternative... China and Vietnam aren't very different other than size and population...
