Why are people living paycheck to paycheck? Could be a myriad of reasons ranging from people mismanaging their own money , lack of education to get a better job, government regulations forcing higher prices on goods and services...

No one is advocating for the workers to take over the means of production. That you are afraid of the workers taking over at a time when the ultra wealthy are more powerful than ever is absurd. Even if a so-called "far left candidate" wins, the super rich have enormous control over Congress, the judiciary and the economy to make sure that workers will still be at a massive disadvantage and there will be no meaningful increase in benefits for the disabled, the sick and the poor, calm down.
At best, you might see a public option happen in 10 years time after big pharma and the insurance industry have spent billions fighting against it. But even that is unlikely even if a "far left candidate" becomes president. Thats how much power the billionaire class have compared to regular Joe Sixpack.
Socialism is workers owning the means of production. Nothing to do with taxes nor the government.

Socialism, like so many other "isms" is very complex in nature. And nowhere near as simple as you state. It's a demonstration of cluelessness in itself.
That doesnt make sense. A proper government public safety net, like FDR advocated, is intended to make sure that workers DO NOT revolt against capitalism, because the safety net gives provides an escape from the worst desperation and keep the workers quiet. FDR always said that he saved capitalism.
A capitalist system without any form of safety net is the true stepping stone to socialism, workers taking things into their own hands and revolting. Thats what the ruling class is truly afraid of.
