Basically every historical figure from long ago would be considered a brute by modern standards. We can't just start tearing down every historical statue and erasing holidays because liberals get triggered by human history.
Okay, judge him by the standards of his day. Guess what? He still sucks.

In his own day, he was considered a brute. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, who funded his voyage, were horrified at his conduct and brought him back to Spain to stand trial. Another one of their little projects was the Spanish Inquisition, and even by those standards he went too far.

There are actual historical documents that prove this. Not just that he tortured, maimed, killed, and enslaved people (including children) but that his peers thought this was appalling and wrong.

And I'm not even white......
Again- then judge him by the standards of his day which guess what, he was!

In 1500, he was removed from his post by Ferdinand and Isabella, who had gotten reports of his tyranny and brutality. He and his brothers were arrested and imprisoned.

He was later freed - but never permitted to be governor again and there are numerous historical documents in which his atrocities are described and condemned by people who were there at the time.

"Oh hey it's not cool to dismember people and drag them through the streets" is not a modern liberal plot. Columbus' behavior was - even for the standards of his time - horrific.

He did discover it for the rest of the world, and brought the two continents together and that was of essential importance. Not merely for some Europeans but for Africans and Asians as well. Their diet fundamentally changed for the better as a result which improved their ability to survive. Your nonsense about people from Africa and Asia trading with the New World before Columbus is a nice fairy tale, but merely wishful thinking on your part.

Columbus Day...

meh

One of those anonymous "holidays" where only the banks and govt offices shut down and everybody else goes to work.

It's a real yawner.

That was almost certainly merely a power struggle among the elites at the time. Its like Stalin removing various people from history because he was "concerned" about their behavior. If people upset the rulers of the day, they dont have any qualms about removing them.

Well, technically it was the Asians that came to America how ever many millennia ago! You know, "Native" Americans?

Same here. I have never in my whole life enjoyed the pleasure of being off from work on that day, and I am of retirement age.

I’ll take the day off- but as long as we have history straight of what really happened. The twisting of facts to make heroes if those that were not, need to be corrected.

Using the correct estimate of the Earth's diameter, the distance to India by heading west is much longer than the known distance to the east. The estimate Columbus used was based on an incorrect assumption, so he believed the trip would be much shorter than it later proved to be. Hence the western hemisphere was rediscovered... due to bad math.
