If she can't participate in oral arguments, she shouldn't be participating in writing any opinions. Well, her staff shouldn't. We all know that's who's doing her job for her and has been for years.
Not sure I agree. First, I'd imagine most, probably all, of the justices are dependent on their clerks, so let's not pretend that she's any more blameworthy than anyone else. Second, as to oral/written, one has nothing to do with the other in this case. She may be perfectly capable of writing, but just - like anyone else - doesn't want to be put in the position of the embarrassment of having to run out to make a beeline for the bathroom with her "stomach bug."
I think she's trying to wait it out until October 2020, as a way to try and motivate dems to vote for whichever one of the Democratic-Socialists is eventually nominated for the general election. God knows the Democrat's candidate sure wouldn't motivate anyone, so Ruth hopes to give them a nudge.
That's the sales pitch reason, but the truth like everything else is a lot more complicated.
Lifetime appointments are the ultimate payoff for loyalist who will always favor the ideals of those that appoint them. It is an understood quid pro quo that strict adherence to the philosophies of the President, Governor, etc. will protect the legacy of those that appointed them, and mold the government in the direction desired by them. The powers that be make this easier by appointing lifetime advocates of similar philosophy and the partisanship, especially in SCOTUS appointments and confirmations where partisanship isn't even thinly veiled anymore. But they could easily find appointees that would cut a deal for those appointments if necessary. Our government and judicial system is full of power hungry people who would sell their principals for much less than a lifetime appointment.
In truth all lifetime appointments do is ensure lifetime partisan decisions. Nothing is immune to the pressure of politics or above the reach of bribery. That is especially true when any part of government is involved. And, lifetime appointments are the ultimate bribe for those who seek power.
I think that's one way of looking at things.
But then you have justices that don't fit the mold of the president that appointed them at all, to include Souter, Stevens, Kennedy, and O'Connor. All were appointed by Republican presidents, and all were much more left leaning than the presidents who appointed them (with Souter and Stevens being completely left wing loons).
Can nominee get hearing during election year? Thought there was a rule against that...
Only when the president nominates someone without sufficient support in the Senate. If you make a quality nomination, they'll get on the bench no matter when it is.

I agree there are exceptions and I also believe there are people who would adhere to their principles even if they had to lose out on the appointments. I was just speaking in general about my theory on the notion that lifetime appointments takes politics out of the mix.
There is no perfect world and/or government. That said, I think America's Constitution and political system is as good as or better than any other. It is just that anywhere there are people in power there is greed and corruption, and politics always comes into play.
