Exactly! Most Hispanics/Latinos in our country are racially Mestizos however. Color covers the realm of colors from white to black and is insignificant anyway. So, essentially we are all people of color. Some of us are light in color and some of us are very dark in skin color.

You don't get to pick what you are racially or in gender either. You are what you are born with not what you perceive yourself to be. You can adopt a different culture other than what you were born into if you move to a foreign country since that's desirable in assimilation anyway.

"Hispanic" was not a minority label before the 80s.

There was no concept that Spanish speakers were a minority group before then.

62% of Hispanics in the United States are Mexican. They comprise 11.3% of the United States' population, as 37.0 million
The Mexican population is majority Mestizo, which in colonial times meant to be a person of half European and half Native American ancestry.
The Mexicans who come to the U.S. tend to be of the poorer classes and they have a little more of Native American ancestry.
So they are a little over half Native.

In other words multi millions of Mexicans are brown

It is so stupid that we are here, in 2020, still arguing about the color of a person's skin, as if that meant anything at all.

It's who they are that matters.

But no, we keep beating the ever loving crap out of this dead horse.

Correct.

"Mexican" is not a race, either.

This whole argument is the dumbest thing in the world. White, black, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, whatever...who gives a F! Who cares?! It's the INDIVIDUAL person that we need to pay attention to.

F all, I'm sick of this.

hispanics and other non-black groups call themselves "people of color" when they want to latch onto the black struggle. What's funny is that black people were the first group to detach themselves from the term.

"People of color" is a term politicians use when they want to pretend they care about black people. Its right up there with "minorities", "urban areas", "communities in need, and "marginalized groups"...when usually they are talking about people like white hispanics or LGBT or other ethnic groups.

Stop calling them "people of color" when they are white, and see themselves as white. That's a con.

POC is actually a politically relevant term. Progressive "Latinos" only see the group as "people of color" when they want to argue for funding, resources, and set-asides for people of color. They should get none of that. No they are not the largest minority group.
Bipoc is a new one. Black and or indigenous people of color. These terms that come out of academia are crazy.

I don't think the word holds that kind of sway in the contemporary context of the US. From what I can see its been around since the 70s and the meaning has changed.

That was applied specifically to Mexican Americans thus did not grab a large enough ethnic diversity group enough for widespread political support. it would be like just caring about Chinese Americans while ignoring Asians who families see their heritage from other Asian nations
