Are you still on Facebook?

Not only do they sell and provide your information to all kinds of parties under the terms of the licensing agreement that you clicked on affirming your consent, the security of their systems is apparently sufficiently poor that the phone numbers and personal data of 533 Million users have now been published on the internet for any crook, spammer, troll or wokester to access and abuse at no charge.

533 million Facebook users' phone numbers and personal data have been leaked online

A user in a low level hacking forum on Saturday published the phone numbers and personal data of hundreds of millions of Facebook users for free online.

The exposed data includes personal information of over 533 million Facebook users from 106 countries, including over 32 million records on users in the US, 11 million on users in the UK, and 6 million on users in India. It includes their phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birthdates, bios, and — in some cases — email addresses.
If you think Twitter, Google or YouTube are any better, then I do not know what to tell you.

Haven’t been on there in at least 10 years and their terrible security and privacy practices were a big reason for leaving.

Apparently true since his name and phone number was one of the ones the hackers got!

This is a duplicate thread.

I don't use facebook socially. No photos or posts. But Facebook Marketplace is the new eBay for online commerce. And for local transactions its replaced craigslist. I really don't care about the politics of Facebook or whatever the right or left thinks about it. I will leave that to those who have much more free time than I do.

And the data breach affected 30 million US users. Most were not effected.

Still on it. They have my name... and my hobbies. BD and phone and .... never put there.

Great for keeping up with distant kin and hobbies.

Never have been, never will be. Anyone who supports them with their patronage is supporting anti-free speech organizations. What's more, is they have stolen users' data and used it to make a profit. They use the info you post to build algorithms that they make money from and to target you for views they disagree with. If you use their service, you are giving away any last bit of privacy you had left.

What's wrong with using phone or email and hobby groups online (non-facebook) for doing those things? I don't see the point in pretty much meaningless relationships with distant people. True friends keep in touch without FB. FB realized they can use the psychology of "feeling connected" with people for profit and exploitation of your data. In reality, those meaningless long-term relationships have become in many cases substitutes for creating real in person relationships, leaving people in the end feeling less connected. It is one giant scam and most have no idea.

Facebook is FAR more comprehensive and far more centralized. The probability of seeing certain people's work in various hobbies is tiny when spread across 9097897983 different sites. I can see the work of people I have never heard of and would be less likely to find.

Useful for keeping up with distant friends and relatives. My mom gets a call from me on a regular basis. I work 64 to 68 hours a week on 2 jobs. Cousin It and second circle friends aren't getting a call but it is useful for seeing what is going on in those second circle people.

Never put my phone or birth date on there. Whitepages has more on me except they have an old phone for me. Spokeo thinks I'm far wealthier than I am.

Random other thing is the local town page has reams of info not available elsewhere. It was great for one thing for finding out that the local polling place had moved from the VFW. After so many times at the VFW I ran across a random post there along the lines of "heads up voting moved from VFW to the old folks center"... The county elections page still had it at the VFW...

I skip the political rants.

shrug. Use it for yourself or not. No biggie to me.
