There actually is real data on this, but it’s not a simple issue. Here are some links that give an idea of what is actually going on at the southern border and, surprise! Surprise! It’s not what either side makes it out to be. It’s far too complicated to made into a partisan soundbyte, but people do it anyways.
The issue is complicated, as I said earlier. The number of unauthorized crossings is up, but so is the number of apprehensions. It’s a messy issue that doesn’t lend itself to soundbytes and 2-dimensional solutions like walls. Perhaps, and this is just a thought, all the coups and cold-war support for guerrillas, right-wing governments, and death squads may not have been such a good idea. The CIA was deep into that crap under the Dulles brothers and we thought it would mercifully come to an end after the Iran-Contra Scandal. It didn’t. The US and its DEA has to control the only land crossing for drugs headed north so they can get their cut and have a say in who controls what. Just recently, the US backed a coup in Nicaragua, which was doing pretty good up to that point. The mess in Mexico is almost entirely a product of the US War on Drugs. Perhaps it’s time to admit defeat and end that particular war and admit that the cure is far worse than the disease. Of course, an entire segment of the American economy would collapse if the War on Drugs ended and we can’t have that.
However, for those who simply can’t imagine that migration patterns - legal and illegal - around the southern border might be influenced, even dictated, by policies your own government has pursued for generations seems utterly foolish. The entire fault must be on the border crossers and those who show them humanity. But this is really an ignorant, ahistorical way of looking at the border crisis and until Americans start educating themselves on the historical push and pull factors that make people leave their homes to undergo arduous and uncertain journeys to unknown places, they will never be able to get a handle on this situation.
It is actually very difficult to put a real number on this. Why, you ask? Firstly, they are crossing illegally and thus not through checkpoints where the count is made. Secondly, once across they do their best to avoid being caught and do not report their presence to government officials responsible for counting them. Thirdly, many when questioned will produce counterfeit documentation and lie about their true status.
To achieve a true count it is necessary to document the crossings and track the individuals to ascertain they are not returning after crossing. The term “undocumented” is a key hint that this is not occurring.
There is definitely a surge in border crossings going in the first half of 2021. However, the numbers are comparable to those in 2019, during the Trump administration. So it’s not like what is happening at the border today is unprecedented, or due to partisan policies.
Of course, Republicans only want to compare 2021 to 2020, when immigration was way down due to the pandemic. They don’t want to look back any further, because it shows that Trump was no more successful than Biden in solving this problem.
Trump got mexico to stop caravans at their southern border and 'asylum seekers stay in mexico' policy deterred further. Trump did more than any previous administration in decades. Biden changed it all and now we are here, allowing covid infected illegals to stay because 'asylum'. Nonsense. Thanks for the covid surge dems.
How many of those were turned around and sent back into Mexico?
And how many were welcomed with open arms, given a "Notice to Appear" for a court date they will never keep, and then bused to the U.S. city of their choice... never to be seen again?
The term "Migrant apprehensions" sounds a lot like the migrants were prevented from entering. But in fact it's the exact opposite. These days the CBP doesn't prevent them from coming in. Their job is now limited to giving them a hand up into the bus that will transport the illegal alien into the U.S., to the city of his choice.
