I do not have personal experience from pre 1950's, but it seems as though our society has become much less civil than it was in the past. Swearing and anger are actually rewarded in many cases now.

My ex wife who is now considered one of California's best woman litigators and the former president of the SF Bar Association used to swear like a sailor. When I protested, she would say "that is how lawyers in her firm talk."

We have books like "Good Guys Finish Last".

Historically, there have been societies that encourage "barbaric" behavior and I believe our society is swinging back that way. Perhaps it is a characteristic of societies that think they are all that. They get cocky and then they eventually crash.

If I have any additional constructive criticism for this thread topic beyond that which I've already given, it is my belief that this nation has not been so divided since just prior to the Civil War. It is also my belief that none of the very mediocre but arrogant crop of GOP and Dem nominees offer real solutions for repairing the growing social and cultural divisiveness that has the real possibility of tearing this nation apart.
I'm a transplant to WV, proud to be adopted as one of them. Their generosity is unrivaled, and it really sickens me to hear people bad mouth them having no clue what salt of the earth means. Glad you know better.

Worried about this prolonged divisiveness too. I doubt I'll be voting for McCain, even though I liked him years ago. He's changed into something else, and I don't think we'll see the real him in this election. Too much infighting going on even with repubs., and people forcing religion through politics is a dangerous trend. Re writing the constitution to suit themselves they might as well have their own country elsewhere. Even after elections, it will be 4 yrs of obstructionist behavior forcing any plan to fail.

We can't keep going this way. Something certainly has to give.
